The Department offers three-year graduate and four-semester post-graduate courses in Zoology, and also a three-year B.Sc Biotechnology. The Department is equipped with a fully functional laboratory as well as research facilities. The Department of Zoology got recognition from the University of Kerala as a Research Centre in 1988. The centre has research facilities in areas like Environmental Biology, Fish Biology, Fish Genetics and Fish Physiology. The centre admits Ph.D. students either on full-time or part-time basis under specialized research supervisors.
The centre has undertaken several research projects sponsored by agencies like the UGC; Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram; International Foundation for Science, Sweden; DBT (Govt. of India), Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi and Kerala State Council for Science, technology and Environment (KSCSTE). The centre also gets research funds from the University of Kerala.
Attached to the centre is a Seminar Hall equipped with audio-visual aids like T.V., VCR overhead slide projectors and LCD projector, catering to the needs of post-graduate students and research scholars. As part of extension services, the centre carries out quality testing of drinking water for the benefit of the local public. Counselling services relating to courses and careers in Biology are also available at the centre. |
